For my passion project I chose to team up with two of my friends to build a skate ramp. There were already 4 other students building a skate ramp, a senior for her senior project and three freshmen for their school beautification project. We teamed up with them, fundraised for the materials and then started building the mini ramp. I chose this project because I love to skateboard. Animas High School lets us skateboard in the parking lot at school and in turn has a large skateboarding community. There are a few skate features in the parking lot such as a flat bar grind rail and a few signs that we all skate. However the parking lot is covered in small rocks, which makes skateboarding sketchy because it is hard for the wheels to roll on rocks. Having a skateboard ramp at Animas will allow us to have a solid, safe skateboard feature for the student body to use. The constant access to this mini ramp will give all of the Animas High School skateboarding community an opportunity to improve their skills during their free time at school.
I am very proud of how each member of our group was constantly motivated and proactive about getting things done. We fundraised $300 and all the plywood donations we needed within a week. Immediately we emailed the student body asking for donations as well as numerous skate companies. We held a very successful skateboard competition at the Durango Skatepark and were able to get all the 2x4 donations we needed as well as discounts on plywood from Alpine Lumber. We had help and support from everyone we talked to about it and got more donations than we expected to get. I am so stoked about how excited the Durango skateboarding community got about our project. We have gotten so much help and our whole project has unfolded so fast.
Now that we have a mini ramp done I plan on adding onto it for future projects during my high school career at Animas. We want to create different parts of it that have different height transitions, different types of transitions and different length decks. We are water proofing the ramp with a polyurethane, epoxy based skatepaint that will waterproof it for up to four years. Right now it is a four foot tall, eight foot wide and 24 foot long ramp and it will hopefully have grown substantially within the next two years This ramp is going to have a lasting impact at Animas High School and the Durango, CO skateboarding community.
