Cover Letter:
In the “Meadows or Malls?” unit, we looked into a city councils decision process for land use. Using the systems of linear equations and inequalities that represented this central problem, we began to explore the problem and the different methods of math we would need to use. We began practicing linear programing and learning how to solve systems of equations that contain two variables. Eventually we learned how to graph systems of equations with three variables, then began learning how to solve those three variable equations. Next Lauren introduced us to matrix operations, and how to use matrices to solve multi-variable equation systems. We learned how to enter matrices into our graphing calculators so that we could manipulate them in efforts to come up with a final answer to the central problem. I selected the work in this portfolio because I feel these particular assignments best helped me understand the central question and how to solve it. The final answer was that the cost is $353,750.
Personal Growth:
I remember the day Lauren introduced us to this unit, and how confused I felt. But after I got a grasp on the situation, I began to briefly understand solving two variable equations. How ever, we generally build on concepts on the daily in math class, so I was quickly confused again. I have always felt comfortable graphing equations, so when Lauren added the z plane, making our graphs three dimensional, I thought it was kinda cool. But that led into solving three variable equations, which felt like a blanket over my head, I just couldn’t see what was going on. I found math more challenging than ever this semester and feel I had to put my utmost effort into understanding what was going on. In all honesty, sometimes I did not do that, which made math even more challenging. I feel that I totally grew this unit, and this semester in math class, pushing myself to try harder so that I could understand the most confusing math concepts that I have ever been introduced too. And, in all honesty, in no way do I feel my experience in the cookies unit sophomore year influence this unit positively or negatively for me.
