This project consisted of researching the industrial revolution, the rise of factories, labor issues and unions. We used this information to look further into current labor issues over the course of the semester. We created in-class timed writing's, presentations and for our final product, a podcast.

Even though children are a cheap source of labor, having children work at young ages limits their natural born potential.
When children are allowed the freedom to do whatever they would like to do at young ages, it allows for their creative imaginations to grow and for them to mature naturally. This freedom allows them to find their passions and come to understand the world at a comfortable pace. When children are traumatized at young ages it is more likely to have a long term impact on their nervous systems. How ever, if a child is supported while their comfort levels grow, they are less likely to be negatively impacted. When a child hears “a terrified shriek” as “a boy is mangled and torn in the machinery, or disappears in the chute to be picked out later smothered and dead,” (Spargo, 2) they are going to be traumatized, and that trauma will follow them for the rest of their life and influence their decisions and actions in many ways.
During the Industrial Revolution, children were taken advantage of for cheap labor. The practice has greatly influenced the way children are raised and treated all the way up to present day. “They were stooped little things, round shouldered and skinny, some with their fingers off at the knuckle.” (Jones, 1) Many of these children were younger than ten years old, as they began to grow up, these traumatic childhoods followed them into their adulthoods through drugs, alcohol and other issues. Then they proceeded to influence their kids negatively and so on. Because of this, their are children and adults that still suffer the effects of the industrial revolution.
Although having children work during the Industrial Revolution brought major profit increases and technological advancements, the resulting reactions still impact our lives today. The industrial revolution has gave way to create the entire society humankind exists in today. For example, our education system, one of the keystones in the America, is a direct result of realizations that happened during the industrial revolution. Look at the similarities between child labor and the bare bones concept of the public school system, the school system was originally designed to train factory workers and was eventually modified to cater to all types of occupations and careers. This current system is, to the best of its ability, allowing children to fulfill their natural born potential.
Even though many sad realities came out of the Industrial Revolution, many exciting ideas were born as well. Because of human-kinds reactions to the many grotesque wrong-doings from the Industrial Revolution, a system that caters to developing children to be the best individuals they can be has been implemented. This is a direct acknowledgement of the fact that working at a young age limits one's natural born potential.
Project Reflection:
This has been, in all honesty, a project that I had a difficult time getting interested in. I have never made a podcast before, and I am not a fan of recording my voice or editing audio. Finding direction at the beginning of this project was a difficult task, and once my group did, it was still challenging going up to people and asking for interviews, recording ourselves and using soundtrap. I think that when there is something I don’t enjoy doing, I don’t like to do it. I think it is because I am such passionate person that I would rather spend time doing work that interests me instead of doing something that feels like a waste of my time. Not that this project was a waste of time, but at times I just didn’t care enough to do my work. I think motivation was my biggest challenge, I overcame it by trying to create a fun personal flare in our podcast to make the work process more interesting.
Looking back on the project there is a lot I would do differently. I would plan for it differently, pick a different topic and outline my podcast differently. I would make it more like a talk show, write out a fluid script after I had collected interviews, and create one long recording, split it in parts and enter the interviews there. I would use a different medium to create the podcast so that we could all contribute from our own computers. It really frustrated me that we could only edit the podcast on my computer. I would do all this differently because these changes address the things I really struggled with and did not like about this project. If I were to make these changes, the process would go much smoother and be more entertaining.
Although I, overall, did not like this project, I feel I gained very helpful insights and learned new, interesting and relevant things. My biggest take away from this project was learning how America’s wealth is distributed. I had never really thought much about the concept of the distribution of wealth. I figured you got what you earned, but there are a lot of factors that go into ones salary. Ones background, whether that's criminal records, being from another country or growing up in poverty, ones gender and ones race can heavily influence their annual salary.
Honestly, there is nothing that I am specifically proud of in this project. I am proud of the work we created and the work we did, but I am not especially proud of it. I did not feel passionate about creating this podcast and it was a challenging project for me. How ever, after thinking about it a little more while I was writing the beginning of this paragraph, I realized that I am very proud of how I persevered through this project. I had a difficult time motivating, so I had to look inside myself and pull out some personal drive and motivation to complete this project. I feel my entire group did the same thing and I am super stoked on all three of us for pulling through and creating our podcast.
Looking back at this project, I find a hard time pointing out a specific way that I really grew. I did not care for this project to much so in a way my perseverance may have grown, as well as my skills using soundtrap and creating a podcast. How ever, I think the growth that I really experienced during this project was a collective product of all my classes. I struggled a lot in math class this semester and, with all my academic struggles combined, I had to push myself to motivate so that I could learn new things that I did not want to learn. I had to be more open-minded about the projects we are doing in school and have a more positive attitude about school, which at times was not easy. Reflecting on this project, I feel I will have, in the future, a more open-minded and positive attitude towards new projects, concepts and ideas in school, no matter what I truly think of them.
